The MP3 was originally created back in 1995 and was already in wide-use by 1997.

A German Foundation, which owns the patent for MP3 audio format and licenses it, has announced that it's abandoning the licenses to the format.

The folks at the Fraunhofer Institute claim that AAC is the "de facto standard for music download and videos on mobile phones".

Neil Young and opinionated sound engineers everywhere have a reason to smile: The organization responsible for the MP3 audio format is closing the doors on its licensing program.

The institute writes, "Although there are more efficient audio codecs with advanced features available today, mp3 is still very popular amongst consumers".

Now, most media services such as streaming/TV and radio broadcasting have made the jump from older codecs to new and modern formats.

Many music streaming services have chose to give up on the classic MP3 format and switch to the more advanced AAC, which offers a better sound quality. For many years, the company has used AAC as its default audio codec over MP3 in iTunes. Additionally due to its small size and compatibility with all mainstream audio software, this is the format of choice.

According to podcast analytics firm Blubrry "60 percent of podcasts are downloaded for playback on-demand", with many of those files distributed in MP3 format. It probably won't have an impact on device design either, because it's highly unlikely any company will drop support for a free standard that's also the overwhelmingly popular format for audio playback support.

Yes, you can still play MP3 files on Windows PCs and Apple Macs, as well as on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

If you thought MP3s were here to stay, the format has gone the way of tape cassettes and have officially been killed off.

The file format was largely demonized by the decade's end, however, after record labels and musicians alike raised piracy concerns and warned the MP3 would be the music industry's end. Most of the music we listen to nowadays is contained and organised in virtual libraries, where files are compressed in better than MP3 formats.
