Online clinic could be alternative abortion service, study suggests

Abortions with pills bought online are 'no riskier' Study: Mail-Order Medical Abortions Are Safe And Effective

Ireland and Northern Ireland have some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world, meaning women there who wish to terminate a pregnancy face a choice that's familiar to many in the U.S.: traveling long distances to the nearest clinic or self-sourcing medication abortion pills at home.

Furthermore, the women were able to identify the symptoms of possibly serious complications, almost all of whom reported seeking in-person medical attention when advised.

Women on the Web is an organisation which provides women seeking a termination with medical abortion pills to end a pregnancy up to 10 weeks gestation. The study was conducted in 1,000 women residing in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, where abortion is not available through the formal healthcare system "except in a few restricted circumstances".

The non-peer reviewed study titled "Self reported outcomes and adverse events after medical abortion through online telemedicine" was published online May 16 in the British Medical Journal.

She added that the group that provided the date on which the study was based was "putting the lives and health of pregnant women in Ireland at risk by promoting self-use of abortion pills". On the other hand, at-home abortion using online telemedicine could be a preference for some women, and future conversations about abortion access in the United States should focus on expanding the range of options available to provide the best possible care for each individual. Seven women needed a blood transfusion and 26 received antibiotics. "Moreover, women are highly capable of managing their own abortions and seeking medical attention when the need arises", Aiken told MedPage Today.

Katherine D. Pocius, M.D., MPH, the medical director of family planning at Massachusetts General Hospital, says that medication-induced abortion is "incredibly safe". That ban is one of eight general types of Texas abortion laws "that are not grounded in science", according to a study by the abortion rights group, Guttmacher Institute.

She believes that the study is "putting the lives and health of pregnant women in Ireland at risk by promoting self-use of abortion pills". In the Republic of Ireland, taking drugs to induce an abortion carries up to a 14-year prison sentence. "Women could then safely use this medication at home if they preferred, once prescribed by a medical practitioner, with access to appropriate support". "Women in these countries often resort to unsafe methods to end their pregnancies", the Irish researchers write.

"Our governments continue to shirk their responsibility to women despite having a clear mandate to introduce proper abortion access North and South, following the results of the Citizens" Assembly and various reports by human rights watchdogs, ' she continued.

None of the five women who did not seek medical attention reported experiencing an adverse outcome.

About a quarter of the world's population lives in nations with significant abortion restrictions.

While abortion medications were sent to a total of 1,636 women, followup information was only available for 1,158, the researchers said.

Aiken and Princeton University researcher James Trussell over three years studied 1,000 women who sought an abortion through Women on Web.

"We already know that medical abortion with mifepristone is one of the safest options and that it is highly effective".
