French constitutional council officially approves Macron as president-elect

Dexter Carr | 19 May, 2017, 23:10

After he congratulated him for his election that crowns his political career, the King pointed out that through this election, the French people, faithful to their country's noble values, have made "the choice of progress, openness and confidence in the future". In the run off that set the newcomer against Marine Le Pen - doyenne of the French far right - the centrist Macron came away with some 66% of the vote. For them, Macron's victory brought badly needed relief after last year's shock election results in Britain and the United States, widely seen as revolts against "establishment" candidates and institutions.

In a tweet Sunday, Trump says he's looking forward to working with Macron, but did not immediately extend an invitation for him to visit the White House.

"After Brexit and Trump's victory, the Western world and Europe have been spared another political quake", said German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "Allow me to wish you much success and personal satisfaction in this highly significant and challenging role as leader of France". French voters on Sunday ultimately rejected her populist wave of "French-first" nationalism by a large margin, in which Le Pen had threatened to leave the European Union.
