Right wing extremist sheriff may join DHS; department has yet to confirm

Controversial Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke says he's taking Homeland Security post David Clarke, who says he's taking a top post at Homeland Security, thinks marijuana is gateway to heroin

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr., a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump and a familiar face in conservative media, said Wednesday he has accepted a federal appointment as assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Clarke said he will be an assistant secretary at DHS' Office of Partnership and Engagement, which coordinates outreach to state, local and tribal officials and law enforcement.

"I'm exhausted of all these crocodile tears about 'the kids, the poor kids coming.' We're not talking about that", Clarke said in yet another clip.

A woman who should know says Sheriff David Clarke is a poor fit for his new job in Washington.

Kayyem, who has Lebanese Christian roots but has raised her three children in the Jewish tradition with her Jewish husband, warned Kelly that at times of crisis, he will "need someone who can look beyond a narrow police focus" and "does not elicit shock, dismay or rejection". But the death happened under his leadership, which his critics said was sufficient cause for Clarke to be fired.

He has been called "a wild-card", "outspoken and polarizing", and "a conservative firebrand", by the Associated Press, which also noted that Clarke has called himself "one of those bare-knuckle fighters". Clarke has not been formally charged or convicted of any crime and has deflected questions about the death by focusing on Thomas's criminal record.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning: "The public safety of our local communities and our nation isn't a joke, a game, or a popularity contest - but that's exactly how Sheriff David Clarke has treated his role over the past few months".

"Our country deserves better", Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, who has repeatedly clashed with Clarke, said of his appointment to the DHS position.

Clarke, who's African-American, raised his national profile with a speech at the Republican National Convention in July and his vigorous defense of law enforcement. During one of those clashes in 2013, Clarke insulted Abele saying he had "penis envy".

An immigrant-advocacy group, Voces de la Frontera, expressed concern about the sheriff's announcement, calling him "unfit for any office" in a statement. Some have wished Clarke well, while others have been critical of the decision.

Walker said Wednesday he won't start that process until he receives the sheriff's official resignation letter.
