Volkswagen Up GTI Revealed - The Hot Hatch That India Deserves!

Hooray! The VW Up GTI is a real thing Volkswagen to reveal long-awaited Up GTI at Worthersee

Now, Volkswagen is trying to recapture some of that first GTI's magic and apply it to another small auto, with the planned-for-production Up!

You may recall the prototype drive in the Up GTI from late previous year; now it's official with the vehicle due to be revealed in public at next week's Worthersee Treffen in front of thousands of cheery and (probably) beery VW fans.

Rumours of a hot Volkswagen up! have been brewing ever since a GT up! concept showed up during the launch of the original way back in 2011.

We've known about this vehicle for a while now, but it's, err, still not here. In our tests, the current-generation VW Golf GTI hit 0-60 miles per hour in as little as 5.7 seconds when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, but VW estimates the up! version will take 8.8 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour.

The new vehicle produces 115 hp, taking it from 0-62 miles per hour in 8.8 seconds hitting a top speed of 122 miles per hour. The two feature similar dimensions, and top speed varies just slightly from 122 miles per hour on the up! Due to reach showrooms early next year, here is hoping that the Up can transcend some of the magic of the mk1 Golf GTI. Although not quite as light as the original, the new model weighs a respectable 2,198 pounds. That's an increase of 23 horsepower from 89 in the current Up!'s most powerful engine, and it's four horsepower more than the original Mark 1 GTI's 109. Inside the cabin, you'll notice a leather-trimmed steering wheel, seats with the iconic "clark" pattern, and more GTI badging.

The suspension drop certainly makes it look a bit meaner, mind.

The auto will debut at the GTI Meet at Lake Wörthersee later this month.

Two versions of the 1.5-litre EVO engine are joining the updated Golf line-up which Volkswagen promises is now the most comprehensive engine line-ups of any United Kingdom auto model. A move helped by its three-door layout, something increasingly rare in the hot hatch sector.
