Nicknamed El Pistolero for his attacking style and ability to mount devastating attacks in the mountains, Contador won his first Tour de France in 2007 with the Discovery Channel team before moving to Astana and winning it again in 2009.

Spain's second most successful rider behind five-time Tour victor Miguel Indurain, Contador will bring the curtain down on his career at the Vuelta on home soil.

Contador is a three-time victor of the Vuelta, sealing victories in 2008, 2012 and 2014, while he was also Giro champion in 2008 and 2015.

Contador, who announced on Monday this year's Vuelta would be his last professional race, will be bidding for a fourth title after his triumphs in 2008, 2012 and 2014.

The 34-year-old, who recently finished ninth in this year's Tour de France while riding for the Trek-Segafredo team, confirmed he will ride in this year's Vuelta de Espana (Tour of Spain) which starts on August 19 and that will be his final race.

Cycling - The 104th Tour de France cycling race - The 183-km Stage 17 from La Mure to Serre-Chevalier, France - July 19, 2017 - Movistar rider Nairo Quintana of Columbia and Trek-Segafredo rider Alberto Contador of Spain in action.

"It's a decision that I have thought about very well and I don't think that there is a better farewell than in a home race in my own country".

"I'm sure they will be three wonderful weeks".

The Vuelta begins in Nimes, France on August 19 before finishing on September 10 in Madrid - just a few miles from Contador's birthplace in Pinto. Though Contador claimed contaminated meat had caused him to fail the test, the ban stripped him of his 2010 Tour de France and 2011 Giro d'Italia wins. That year, he won Paris-Nice, Vuelta a Castilla y León and more importantly, the Tour de France.
