Mattis: US, Allies Outmatch North Korea Militarily

North Korean missile launch US warns North Korea against action 'that will lead to the end of regime and destruction of its people'

Defense Secretary James Mattis on Wednesday warned North Korea that its people would be destroyed in a nuclear war with the U.S. - an escalation of rhetoric as other administration officials were trying to downplay the threat. The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" if the communist nation continues to threaten his country.

Mattis, rather than threatening to strike if North Korea continues to make threats, said that North Korea "would lose any arms race of conflict it initiates", which adheres to a long-standing policy of attempting to deter North Korea with the promise of a swift, overwhelming response to any attack. "And as I said, they will be met with fire, fury, and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before".

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that North Korea had obtained the capability of creating a nuclear warhead small enough to place on a missile.

Mattis said that though the State Department is making efforts to resolve the threat using diplomatic means, allied militaries possess "robust defensive and offensive capabilities".

Lest anyone think Trump was speaking without the counsel of his top military man, Mattis said Trump is well aware of the depth of the North Korean threat.

Trump's unexpected remarks prompted North Korea to respond that it was considering plans for a missile strike on the US Pacific territory of Guam.

A new report says Pyongyang's nuclear programme is progressing. DPRK is short for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Before Trump's tweets on the nuclear arsenal, Tillerson arrived in Guam on a previously scheduled visit after telling reporters he did not believe there was an imminent threat from North Korea and "Americans should sleep well at night". On Saturday, for example, members of the U.N. Security Council approved new economic sanctions on the regime.

The country also, according to another intelligence assessment, is estimated to have at least 60 nuclear weapons.

These are some of strongest comments Mattis has made on North Korea. It says its ICBMs are a legitimate means of defense against perceived USA hostility, including joint military drills with South Korea.
