On the sectoral front, realty was the hardest hit, down 4.53%, followed by oil & gas (2.16%), PSU (2.08%), power (1.88%), FMCG (1.50%), bank (1.34%), healthcare (1.32%), capital goods (0.93%) and IT (0.60%).

At 0918 hours Sensex was trading at 31,917.97, down 96.22 points or 0.30%, while NSE Nifty was trading at 9,945.8, down 32.75 points or 0.33%.

The Sensex opened at 31,926.14 points and touched a high of 31,933.04 points but also a low of 31,885.41 points.

In terms of the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index declined by 1.66 per cent and the small-cap index by 1.69 per cent. It was the third consecutive session of losses.

Indian shares fell on Wednesday, tracking weak cues from global markets after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that North Korea would face fire and fury like the world has never seen before, if Pyongyang keeps threatening the United States.

Volatility continued to plague Dalal Street as benchmark indices languished into the negative territory despite a buoyant outset in Tuesday's session. At 9.15am, the rupee was trading at 63.70 a dollar, down 0.20% from its Friday's close of 63.58.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 1,017.10 crore on Friday, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold stocks to the tune of Rs 853.80 crore, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges.

The Indian rupee weakened against the USA dollar, tracking mixed Asian currencies market.

The gauge had lost 311.22 points in the previous two sessions. "Index has recently corrected from 10137 to 9950 zones and if major support of 9928 is broken then short term trend may turn negative".

Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, L&T, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj Auto among others were down 1-4 percent while HDFC, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Asian Paints, ONGC and NTPC bucked the trend with 0.5-1 percent gains.
