Some, though, are still within the expiry date and are being withdrawn from shelves.

In total, about 80 egg-product-procession factories all over France would be involved in this national investigation, according to local media.

The inspector general of the Dutch food safety authority rejected the claim, but conceded in a written statement that the authority received an anonymous tip in November about the illegal use of pesticide to disinfect stalls.

The agency says that 85 percent of eggs eaten in the United Kingdom are laid there and "we have no evidence that eggs laid in the UK are contaminated or that Fipronil has been used inappropriately in the UK". But they say the number is a tiny fraction of the eggs consumed each year in the country.

"However, Fipronil is not legally allowed for use near food-producing animals and it shouldn't be there".

Outside of the country of origin, five countries have announced to have been delivered in contaminated eggs.

It is believed that Fipronil, used to kill fleas, lice, ticks, roaches and mites, was inadvertently mixed with a cleaning product routinely used in chicken coops.

A spokesman of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel confirmed Thursday that Belgium will set up a task force to examine all possible measures to support the poultry sector following the insecticide-contaminated egg scandal.

The spiralling scandal that has seen eggs taken off the shelves across Europe also reached Luxembourg, while Britain said it had imported 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms linked to fears over fipronil contamination, far more than first thought. The eggs were produced in the Netherlands, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) said.

Dozens of farms are being checked in the Netherlands, while Belgium's food safety agency is probing how Fipronil might have entered eggs destined for supermarkets.

The FSA said the decision to withdraw these products is not due to food safety concerns, but is based on the fact that Fipronil is not authorised for use in food producing animals.

The Dutch agency for food security NVWA and the public prosecutor in the netherlands have formed an investigation team jointly with the services of inquiry with belgian, with the support of the european Office of the fonts Europol and the european body for judicial cooperation Eurojust. In large quantities fipronil can cause liver, kidney and thyroid gland damage.

In the European Union, the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) was created in 1979 and enables information to be shared between its members (EU-28 national food safety authorities, Commission, EFSA, ESA, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland).
