Despite the early hour, thousands of spectators, including swimming champion Michael Phelps, had already filed into Quail Hollow by time Spieth arrived at the tee at 8.23 a.m. local time (1223 GMT), a couple of minutes after Sergio Garcia and Brooks Koepka, the three majors champions of 2016 grouped together for the final major of the year.

It would be a fitting tournament to return to winning form which is clearly the goal for the competitive 29-year-old.

Casey, who began on the back nine, dropped his approach at the par-4 11th three feet from the cup and sank the birdie putt. At the par-5 10th hole, his first of the day, Koepka failed to convert a 4-footer for birdie and had to settle for an opening par.

A huge gallery lined the par-five 10th hole from tee to green as Jordan Spieth started his quest for the elusive grand slam at the PGA Championship on Thursday.

"Definitely could have shot a little bit better but it's one under".

"I felt awful about it", Koepka said, although he had not shouted the traditional warning of "fore" following his drive.

"It annoys and motivates me at the same time, because I know how good I can be, because I have gotten to number one in the world", Day said. "I think I will do that a lot differently". With some of the pin locations, these greens are the fastest greens I've ever played. Once the ball hit the volunteer, it shot 30 yards forward and into the fairway.

Perhaps as much as anything, Perry is just pleased to have rejuvenated his career.

"I'll give you an example I had 72 yards from my second shot on the eighth hole, I walked up to it and I had nowhere really to land my second shot - maybe two or three yards to land it with a pitch shot".

"I felt bad about it", said Koepka, who would bogey the hole.

"I'm not trying to sound like a smart aleck (but) surely they didn't move the PGA here on the basis they'd only change three holes".

"It was very hard for me to be on the golf course and even think about actually playing", Day said.

"I really just haven't got the results I've been hoping for and I'd put it more down to poor driving than anything by my standards". Never feel like you're out of the hole.
