She made Pakistan her homeland and devoted her life in service of Tuberculosis and leprosy patients in Pakistan.

The funeral was scheduled for August 19 in Karachi, said Shariq Zaman, a spokesman for Pfau's charity.

Ruth Pfau, a German doctor and nun who dedicated her life to eradicating leprosy in Pakistan and who has been described as the country's "Mother Teresa", died in Karachi on Thursday.

It was after the horrors of World War II in her native Germany that Pfau chose to dedicate her life to serving humanity, becoming a doctor and joining the Daughters of the Heart of Mary order, founded during the French Revolution.

Homage began pouring in from the Pakistani authorities soon after the announcement of her death.

"Dr Pfau's services to end leprosy in Pakistan can not be forgotten. Pakistani nation salutes Dr Pfau and her great tradition to serve humanity will be continued", said President Mamnoon Hussain.

Known as "Light to the Lepers", the nun was admitted to a hospital in Karachi two weeks ago following deterioration of her health.

In the 1950s she studied medicine in Germany.

Pfau trained as a doctor in her youth and went on to join a Catholic sisterhood.

The Pakistan government recognized her selfless service by awarding her the country's second-highest civilian award "Hilal-i-Imtiaz" in 1979, and later "Hilal-e-Pakistan" in 1989.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi announced in a statement that a state funeral would be held for Ruth Pfau who died on Thursday aged 87.

She is to be buried on Sunday at a Christian cemetery in Karachi, Pakistan.

And as Pfau told the BBC, she never forgot that young man she met on her first stay in Karachi, the patient who crawled toward her in the dirt because he'd been convinced there was nothing more for him than that.
