"I want you to know there is a place for you in this industry", Pichai said. "To all of the girls tonight, I want to say thank you for joining us at Google. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise". "You belong here, and we need you", said a report in The Verge on Friday, quoting Pichai.

His views are crucial at a time when an anti-diversity manifesto, written by a Google software engineer James Damore, which claimed that "the representation gap between men and women in software engineering persists because of biological differences between the two sexes".

James Damore, the former Google engineer who was sacked Monday after posting a missive criticizing the company's diversity programs that leaked online. A similar sentiment was recently expressed by Google's recently appointed Vice President of Diversity Danielle Brown who said that Alphabet's subsidiary seeks to nurture an open working environment where employees don't feel threatened or afraid of sharing their beliefs so long as such views are in line with the company's Code of Conduct.

Following Damore's memo, some "minority Googlers" were hurt by the "perception they are less qualified", according to one question posted to the company's internal message boards for the all-hands meeting. At the event, Pichai was honoring teams of girls and young women who participated in the Technovation challenge and created apps that seek to address issues like healthcare and poverty.

The coding event this evening was co-hosted by Iridescent Learning, an L.A. -based non-profit that has run the Technovation competition for the past several years. Among these men, a lot of them are white and Asian.

The employee gathering was scheduled to air viewpoints swirling in after the dismissal of a Google engineer over a memo defending the Silicon Valley gender gap.

Thank you all for joining, it's a pleasure to be here tonight with many creators, coders, and budding entrepreneurs. And that's how we think about it.

Seeing the girls here tonight gives me hope for the future.

During his Thursday appearance, Mr. Pichai said that as Google continues to build products for an worldwide audience, it must strive for its workforce to be an accurate representation of that audience, having people of all genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, and religions. And that's how we think about it.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has given a public defence of the importance of diversity in the technology industry and called on more women to enter the field. These initiatives included bias training and programs to promote minorities and women. I'm also not saying that we should restrict people to certain gender roles; I'm advocating for quite the opposite: "treat people as individuals, not as just another member of their group (tribalism)", he added.
