Witnesses said a auto ploughed into a crowd of people who were protesting against a rally held by white nationalists who oppose the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee by civic officials in Charlottesville.

One counterprotester apparently deployed a chemical spray, which affected the eyes of a dozen or so marchers. She said some injuries had been reported.

At least one of the injured was a university police officer.

In a statement issued prior to Friday night's events, Virginia's Gov. Terry McAuliffe said that "personnel from Virginia's National Guard were standing by to respond if needed" ahead of Saturday's rally. Police in riot gear ordered demonstrators to disperse as they marched onto the scene Saturday.

Groups began gathering early Saturday morning, and police were in position at Emancipation Park and downtown Charlottesville at 6 a.m.

White supremacy protests in Charlottesville, Virginia forced the cancellation of Virginia fall sports' Meet the Team event and a movie night at Scott Stadium. The suit claims that Kessler's first amendment and constitutional rights were violated because on August 7, city officials initially tried to revoke his original event permit, and then changed the location of the event.

"GLAAD and countless LGBTQ Americans stand firmly together with other marginalized communities to denounce these disgusting threats and cowardly fear tactics", Ellis told Variety. "I place the blame for a lot of what you're seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president". "We're going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump", Duke said in a video circulating on Twitter.

The president of the university campus, Teresa Sullivan, released a statement condemning the protestors' actions.

But Jason Kessler, the rally's organizer, filed suit against the city that was supported by the Virginia ACLU saying that his First Amendment rights would be violated by moving the rally.

City officials proposed that the rally be held at the larger McIntire Park instead, due to safety concerns.

"Virginia is the birthplace of the rights to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly that make our country great", McAuliffe said.

In Conrad's opinion, he stated that in order for a plaintiff to be granted a temporary injunction, it must be proven the plaintiff is "likely to succeed on the merits", "likely to suffer irreparable harm" without it, the "balance of equities tips in his favor" and the "injunction is in the public interest".

A vehicle is seen plowing into the crowd gathered on a street in Charlottesville, Va., after police broke up a clash between white nationalists and counter-protesters.

Sounds familiar: The KKK held a similar, torch-bearing protest in the beginning of July, which was met with 1,000 counter protestors and resulted in 23 arrests.
