The Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Ryan Tannehill on injured reserve with a left knee injury, sidelining him for the entire season.

Tannehill originally injured his knee during Miami's Week 14 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals last season. He will enter the 2018 season at 30 years old and has no guaranteed money left on his contract.

The decision to opt for surgery came after Tannehill discussed his options with head coach Adam Gase on Friday.

That's quite an "if" though, as Cutler struggled through his five games last season, managing five interceptions and just four touchdowns.

The eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Texas A&M, Tannehill had started every game, 77 in all, until December's injury.

When asked about his conversation with Tannehill, Gase said: "It was probably tougher for me". "The fact that it's him and he knows his body and how he feels-It's unfortunate for him because he worked so hard to be available for us".

Tannehill will still be around the team this season, Gase said. He's trying to do everything he can to help Jay (Cutler) out and Matt (Moore) has done a great job.

Tannehill completed 67.1 percent of his passes a year ago, throwing for 2,995 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a career-best 93.5 passer rating in 13 games. The Dolphins consulted with specialists before the team and Tannehill decided on surgery.
