Federal Bureau of Investigation raids President Trump's former campaign manager's home in Russian Federation probe

Earlier this week, sources confirmed that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents had raided Manafort's Virginia home and seized documents and other material as part of the probe.

That investigation has been incorporated into the probe led by Mr Mueller, who is also scrutinising Mr Manafort's role in the Trump campaign as he looks into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and any possible collusion with Trump associates.

Manafort for some time has been the focus of Federal Bureau of Investigation and Senate investigators regarding the possible contacts between Russian Federation and Trump's team.

"Paul is girding himself for a long legal battle", Jason Maloni told Business Insider.

Trump on Thursday shared his reaction to the raid, saying he "thought it was a very, very strong signal, or whatever" by prosecutors and that he was surprised they took such a step because it is something they "very seldom" do.

But in 2008, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, told investors in Moscow, "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross section of a lot of our assets". In June, one of Trump's longtime friends, Christopher Ruddy, said in a television interview that Trump was considering firing Mueller. 'Russia had nothing to do with me winning, ' he said.

According to financial records, Mr Manafort had bank accounts in Cyprus - a tax haven often used for money laundering.

Just last month, Manafort registered as a foreign agent for past work on behalf of Ukraine, his spokesperson confirmed at the time to ABC News.

Leaks may occur because "prosecutors and investigators are being cajoled by those interested in the escalation of the conflict with Russia", the lawyer said, adding that former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and United Kingdom financier William Browder may be among those individuals. "I'm very proud of what we've done at the border", Mr Trump said, likely referring to Mr Sessions' crackdown on illegal immigration.

In the wake of special counsel Robert Mueller's increased focus on Manafort, Trump loyalists are keen to scapegoat him for Trump's Russian Federation problem.

"I have not, but to do that early in the morning, whether or not it was appropriate, you'd have to ask them".

Manafort did provide information and documents to those with the Russian Federation investigation, but the raid does suggest the special counsel doesn't trust him to turn over everything.

Trump Jr. has provided another 250 pages of documents to the committee, with Manafort turning over an additional 400 pages, according to committee officials.
