James Mattis: Military solution in place to address North Korea threat

North Korea has taken a major step forward in realizing its goal of becoming a nuclear power according to a Washington Post report on a confidential US intelligence assessment that concludes Pyongyang has developed a nuclear warhead capable of fitting Global markets jolted by Trump's fiery warning to North Korea

US Defense Secretary James Mattis has said war with North Korea would be "catastrophic" as tensions with the reclusive nation reach breaking point.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis: North Korea "would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates".

In fact, Tillerson had been asked on Wednesday about the diplomatic implications of Trump's threats to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea, not about any military aspect of that foreign policy challenge.

The statement says that "only absolute force" can work on someone as "bereft of reason" as Trump.

"However, right now, Secretary Tillerson, Ambassador Haley, you can see the American effort is diplomatically led, it has diplomatic traction, it is gaining diplomatic results", Mattis said.

Earlier this week, Gen. Kim Rak-Gyom, who heads North Korea's rocket command, said in a statement carried by state media that Pyongyang was "about to take" military action near the USA territory of Guam.

It's the latest warning since he said earlier this week that North Korea faces "retaliation with fire and fury unlike any the world has seen before".

North Korea on Thursday announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the US Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to US bombers.

CLAMAN: It's now big enough that Heather Nauert, the spokesperson for Rex Tillerson was asked about it, she even said as she was walking to the press event there that she was told about it. "But if the North were to act, the US would have to deploy far more to the peninsula and the region as quickly as possible".

Turnbull says: "The United States knows as we know and as Donald Trump reaffirmed. that America stands by its allies including Australia of course and we stand with the United States".

The issue came to the fore again this week when USA intelligence analysts assessed that North Korea had produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead, according to multiple sources, which would bring the country a significant step closer to being able to fire a nuclear-tipped warhead at the US or its allies. "The whole of the Security Council has come together behind that, and I think that we should see the President's public comments as one of the strands, one of the many strands of USA activity".
