A U.S. Navy destroyer challenged China's territorial claim on trade routes in the South China Sea on Thursday when the vessel came within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island China built in the area.

Asked to comment on the challenges faced by the PLAN in the South China Sea, especially from the US Navy, commanding officer of Yulin Capt Hu Luyang said it was okay for the American navy to patrol the area in the worldwide waters.

The U.S. and North Korea have been exchanging threats over North Korea's missile program.

"That is true in the South China Sea as in other places around the globe".

The U.S. exercise, the third of its kind to be held since President Donald Trump assumed office, was condemned as a violation of China's claim to sovereignty, CNN reported.

Earlier Thursday, American warship USS John S. McCain sailed within a 12-mile range of Mischief Reef in the disputed Spratly chain in the South China Sea, US officials told the media. That occurred around Triton Island in the Paracel archipelago, which is claimed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan.

"China holds indisputable sovereignty over Nansha Islands and surrounding waters", Beijing's defense ministry said. The reports, he said, have to be scrutinized for accuracy in order to preserve the interest of the claimant nations, such as between Vietnam and China.

"They called and said 'Please turn around, you are in our waters, '" the newspaper's source said.

It said China's artificial land bridge connecting North Island with neighboring Middle Island was washed out by Typhoon Sarika in October 2016.

Although China opposes inclusion of the sea disputes in worldwide conferences, partly to prevent the U.S. and other Western governments from intervening, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Japan's new top diplomat, Taro Kono, expressed concern over aggressive actions in the waters.

"The 2017 Defence White Paper. still contains cliche about China, which is full of vicious denigration of the Chinese military and blatant deception of the global community", said Col Wu.

Recently, China-ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting adopted the framework of the Code of Conduct (COC).The Code of conduct states that South China Sea disputes should be addressed through negotiations and consultations among the countries directly concerned, and China and ASEAN countries should work together to safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea.

The operation comes four days after the US, Australia, and Japan denounced China's island-building and militarisation of the South China Sea on the sidelines of a security forum of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Philippine capital, Manila.
