Pyongyang, however, warns against the military drills.

Beginning Monday, the USA and South Korea will engage in an 11-day drill that is practice for a possible invasion of North Korea, which is threatening the war games could lead to "catastrophe". The Pentagon fears that North Korea is developing the hydrogen bomb and can complete it through 6-18 months.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency also quoted Kim on Monday warning Washington about the upcoming drills.

Reuters/Emmanuel BraunThe U.S. Military will proceed its war games with South Korea this August amid threats from North Korea. Last year's exercise is known to have had a total of 25,000 US troops, including 2,500 overseas reinforcements.

After a week of high tensions, Pyongyang also stated leader Kim Jong Un would "monitor" the United States before taking unprecedented measures against Guam, the location of a key USA air force base.

Tensions escalated in July after Pyongyang conducted two intercontinental ballistic (ICBM) missile tests and claimed the projectiles are capable of reaching the United States mainland and carrying a nuclear weapon, an assessment some regional and Western analysts concur with.

"The drills deal with all the steps involved in a war, of course, towards victory", said Moon Seong-mook, a retired South Korean brigadier who regularly participated in the drills until the mid-2000s.

The war games, details of which are a closely guarded secret, simulate military conflict with the isolated country.

Far from the dusty firing ranges just south of the heavily fortified border with North Korea, US and South Korean troops hunch over laptops and screens wearing earphones and camouflaged combat uniforms, according to photos of past UFG drills on the United States Forces Korea website.
