The Oaxacan town of Juchitan bore the burnt of the damage.

"There are houses that collapsed with people inside", Luis Felipe Puente, the agency's director general, told TV news channel Milenio.

Peña Nieto announced Friday that the quake killed 45 people in Oaxaca state, 12 in Chiapas and 4 in Tabasco.

Authorities raised the overall death toll throughout Saturday.

The National Seismological Service said in its most recent report that as of midnight Saturday there had been 846 aftershocks of the magnitude-8.2 natural disaster, which struck just off the coast of the southeastern state of Chiapas late Thursday.

Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto announced on Twitter there will be three days of national mourning for those who have died.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude slightly lower, at 8.1.

A study by Mexico's National Seismological Service says that quake is believed to have killed about 400 people, causing severe damage around the port of Manzanillo.

Some people have continued to sleep outside, fearful of more collapses.

At least 61 people have died after what's been measured as the most powerful quake to hit Mexico in a century.

Officials initially issued a tsunami alert, but later lifted it. "In many cases the walls have cracked or collapsed completely".

The sharp increase came as civil defence authorities in the state of Oaxaca said that 71 deaths had been confirmed in that state alone.

More than 200 people were injured across Mexico, officials said.

"Our main needs are basic supplies, medicines, and help with removing the rubble all over the city", Oscar Cruz Lopez, Juchitan's municipal secretary, said.

More than 5,000 homes were destroyed and many more left without running water or electricity in Juchitan. The State Secretariat of Education reported 792 schools damaged by breaks and extensive cracks.

It had a depth of 43.3 miles (69.7 kilometres), the USGS said.

The quake triggered tsunami waves as high as 10 feet, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
