Ivy League graduate and national dance champion Cara Mund from North Dakota won the Miss America pageant on Sunday, becoming the first contestant from the state to ever win the 91-year-old pageant.

During the Q&A portion of the contest, Mund was asked for her thoughts on President Donald Trump withdrawing the United States from the global climate accord.

During the competition, the contestants put their talents on display - Mund showed off her Jazz dance skills - and answered judges' questions on current events. Before taking on her new title, Mund was Miss North Dakota.

"I'm an American", she said. And that's something we really need to keep in mind.

Multiple questions revolved around the political climate and President Trump, who famously owned the similarly named Miss USA pageant from from 1996 to 2015.

In the days before she was crowned, Mund encouraged her supporters to take action.

"It's important to have a woman's perspective", Cara told AP. "I think the answer is to relocate them into museums", she said. She added that only three girls from her state made it to that stage of the pageant.

"Honestly? It was to get to Miss America and make it past the Top 10", Mund said. There is evidence that climate change is existing.

Mund went on to defeat first runner-up Miss Missouri Jennifer Davis, second runner-up Miss New Jersey Kaitlyn Shoeffel, thid runner-up Miss District of Columbia Briana Kinsey, and fourth runner-up Miss Texas Morgana Wood, who also laid into Trump during the pageant.

'I'm thinking about everyone in Florida every single day, but I know that regardless what happens, we'll all get through this together, ' Zeng said.

Miss Texas Margana Wood, who was announced later as 4th runner-up, was asked: "Last month, a demonstration of neo-Nazi white supremacists and the KKK in Charlottesville turned violent, and a protester was killed".

Miss Alaska, Angela Klapperich, 23, who hails from Wasilla, the same town where Sarah Palin was mayor (she was also Miss Wasilla), ventured onto the Boardwalk, sans makeup, to wish Mund well.

The victor will take over for the current titleholder, Miss America 2017 Savvy Shields of Arkansas.
