Those who are climate change deniers are stupid: Pope Francis

Pope Francis appealed to the United Nations on Monday to help Venezuela end a deadly economic, political and social crisis. He came forth about the situation a couple of times.

The highlight of the day was a very personal stop for the Jesuit pope: He prayed at the tomb of St. Peter Claver, the 17th century missionary who ministered to hundreds of thousands of African slaves who were brought through Cartagena's port during Spanish colonial times to be sold.

"I have heard the President of the United States speak", the pope said aboard the papal plane, the National Catholic Reporter reported.

Before the opening prayer, Pope Francis apologised for the wait and thanked the estimated 1.3 million people for their patience. While traveling on the streets of Cartagena in the popemobile September 10, the pope banged his head on the inside of the vehicle as it slowed down suddenly to avoid crowds along his route.

While his trip back to Rome did not have to change flight plans like the flight to Colombia Sept. 6 did because of Hurricane Irma, Pope Francis was asked about the apparently increasing intensity of hurricanes and other storms and what he thinks of political leaders who doubt climate change is real.

The Trump decision "is certainly not Christian", he said.

Francis' message throughout his five-day visit to Colombia had been one of forgiveness and reconciliation. He emphasized that everyone has a moral responsibility to respond to the "very serious" issue of climate change, not only politicians, but each one of us.

Clashes with security forces at anti-government protests left 125 people dead from April to July.

In Cartagena, he visited the impoverished district of San Francisco, where he blessed the foundations of a new homeless shelter.

Pope Francis also touched on climate change, saying a passage from the Bible's Old Testament that dismisses men as "stupid" is the best way to describe deniers.

"Here, there are lots of people who only eat once a day".

Pope Francis was asked about corruption, which can be even more devastating to a country than outright violence.

Colombia's civil war started in 1964 and gave rise to the formation of leftist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries, and drug gangs.

"Those who are abandoned, immigrants and those who suffer violence and human trafficking".

Earlier, Francis got a cut on his brow and blood on his white cape when he bumped his head on the window of his Popemobile.

He was seen later with a bruise on his cheek and a small dressing on his brow, but still smiling.

"I was punched. I'm fine."
