Shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday, authorities at a hospital in Lebanon, New Hampshire, broadcasted an "active shooter alert", local media outlets report.

Authorities were dispatched at the hospital and sent out an announcement that warned people to avoid the area, and traffic was stopped on a route leading to the hospital. WMUR reports that there has been no official confirmation of shots fired but the hospital has issued an "active shooter alert".

The hospital has been placed on lockdown with those inside being told to shelter-in-place.

According to a tweet from hospital officials at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, police are now on site.

A spokesman for the hospital, Mike Barwell, would say only that they have reported "an incident" to the police and officers are responding.

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Vermont state police assisted New Hampshire and local police. "We are assessing the situation now, and will have more information as soon as it becomes available", the statement reads.

Heavily-armed police forces are on the scene at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

The state attorney general's office is investigating.
