Olympic committee announces LA choice for 2028 games

The IOC and Pyeongchang 2018 insist the Olympics will not be affected Bach dismisses fears Pyeongchang 2018 could be affected by North Korea crisis

Los Angeles, host city to the 1932 and 1984 summer games, conceded the 2024 Olympics to Paris, Tom goes on, and has been promised $180 million by the International Olympic Committee for doing that.

The IOC selected both cities at the same time at the session in Lima, Peru today.

The French capital is set to be confirmed as the Olympic host in 2024, with the 2028 Games going to Los Angeles.

With both Paris and Los Angeles rated a "10" by IOC Evaluation Commission Chair Patrick Baumann after visits to the cities in May, Bach seized on the opportunity and proposed and engineered the tripartite deal that will secure "stability" for the Games for the next decade. The Firm served as legal counsel and strategic adviser to Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) in connection with Los Angeles' successful bid to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Paris, which is expected to be awarded the 2024 Games, would also be hosting for the third time, and two cities were initially in competition just for 2024.

The race began early in 2015 with a different USA candidate but the abysmal public support for Boston forced that city to part ways with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) who turned to Los Angeles instead just days before the application deadline.

It says the two cities have "put together very inspiring projects".

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said, "This is a momentous day for the people of Los Angeles and the United States".

"Despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee has awarded L.A. the bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, the fight isn't over", the NOlympics LA group said in a statement.

Hosting the Olympics is nothing new for Paris, although it has been a while. Tokyo's budget for 2020 continues to balloon.

Thanks largely to opposition or lack of political support, eight cities have pulled out of the bidding process for the 2022 and 2024 Games.

The IOC considered both bids to be strong, leading to today's historic event. After initial reports indicated that Paris was the favorite to host in '24, L.A. leaders indicated they were willing to host in '28.

The London 2012 Games raised about $1.1 billion, while Rio de Janeiro in 2016 had claimed it had slightly surpassed London, but final accounts are sketchy given the current investigations for corruption linked to Olympic Games projects in Brazil.

The LA Games have a budget of $5.3 billion and will essentially follow the plan they had in place for 2024, including housing athletes at the UCLA campus.

The Coliseum and the new National Football League stadium in Inglewood are set to share duties for the opening and closing ceremonies, part of a "something old and something new" approach, as the Coliseum was the site of the ceremonies both in 1932 and 1984.
