"I think we're doing a good job in Florida", Trump said upon arrival in Fort Myers. Trump planned to meet Republican Governor Rick Scott and first responders in Fort Myers and visit storm victims in Naples, said Deputy White House Homeland Security Adviser John Daly .

Mr Trump's trip to Florida was his third in less than three weeks to the storm-ravaged South.

The remarks came after Trump praised federal and state officials for their response to Hurricane Irma as he visited Naples and Fort Myers on the state's southwestern coast. Earlier, he made two stops in Texas after Hurricane Harvey caused massive, destructive flooding in and around Houston.

It has also affected Trump's legislative agenda, forcing Congress to appropriate emergency funding for relief efforts.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed the president's trip at Tuesday's press briefing.

After Harvey struck Texas, Trump drew criticism for having minimal interaction with residents during his first trip in late August. White House officials acknowledged that assuming the "comforter in chief" role was harder than it appears on television.

Meanwhile many Floridians remain swamped and without electricity.

In Florida on Thursday, Trump couldn't help but insert some political discourse into his remarks. But I know at a certain point it ends for you and we can't let it end.

"Fascinating to watch people writing books and major articles about me and yet they know nothing about me and have zero access".

Hurricane Irma has slammed into southwest Florida, threatening to bring risky storm surges to coastal areas, already battered by the hurricane's powerful winds. "So I hope he runs for the Senate".

FEMA also said it had moved 3.8 million meals and 3.4 million liters of water to states in the Southeast that were affected by the storm. The risk was illustrated Thursday at a nursing home in Hollywood, where eight residents died after their air conditioning stopped working. Almost 2.7 million homes and businesses - about one in four Florida customers - are without power.
