Trump will sign bipartisan resolution condemning Charlottesville violence, White House says

S. Carolina Sen. Tim Scott to discuss Charlottesville response with Trump Sen. Tim Scott to meet with Trump Wednesday to talk race, Charlottesville response

The House has approved a resolution condemning white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other hate groups following a white-nationalist rally in Virginia that descended into deadly violence. Most important, the document urges Trump to "speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and white supremacy", and use his powers as president to fight these groups. Tim Scott of SC, who drew notice in the wake of Charlottesville for saying that Trump's response had "compromised" the president's "moral authority".

But on Wednesday, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders described the meeting as merely one Trump "wanted to have with the president, and the president wanted to have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the senator" to discuss race relations.

The joint resolution builds on other recent actions that suggest the Republicans who control Congress - and the Republican president, too - may be ready to reach across the aisle to pass important legislation.

Sanders said Trump and Scott spoke about priorities for lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

An Aug. 23 poll by Quinnipiac University in CT showed 55 percent of respondents believe there is "too much prejudice in the nation today", while 59 percent said Trump's "decisions and behavior have encouraged white supremacist groups". I hit them with everything. Following the attacks, which left Heyer dead after a auto plowed into a group of nonviolent protesters, Trump noted that there were "very fine people" on both sides of the march. So the White House sought to fire a member of the press for criticizing the president-a black woman who dared to call Trump and his policies bigoted.

Time will tell, however, just how far Scott's message resonated beyond the 40 minutes that the S.C. Republican spent Wednesday morning with Trump in the Oval Office. She characterized their conversation as focused "primarily on solutions moving forward". Mr Trump defended Confederate monuments last month.

Twitter is ripping into US President Donald Trump over a fashion faux pas committed during his meeting with Republican Senator Tim Scott of SC at the White House on Wednesday, 13 September. Pulling notes from the pocket of his jacket and launching into a long rehash of how he'd responded to the mayhem in Virginia, Trump made clear where he stood: The "totally dishonest" media "was having a hard time" with his condemnation of the violence "because I said everything".
