Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Kevadia, Gujarat on the occasion of his 67th birthday on Sunday.

However, Modi still inaugurated the Dam amidst festivities of his birthday celebration, dedicating this to the nation, and to Sardar Vallabhai Patel, after whom the dam is named.

Later, the Prime Minister visited the construction site of the Statue of Unity, an iconic structure dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, at Sadhu Bet, a short distance from the Sardar Sarovar Dam. In June this year, the dam was raised to the maximum height of 138.68 metre. Speaking about the various benefits of the dam, PM Modi said it will not only change the fate of people of Gujarat but also of farmers of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. However, people of Gujarat remained firm to complete the project at any cost even if the World Bank ceased to give money, he remarked.

Narendra Modi said that starting projects is all very fine, but the most important thing is to ensure they get completed.

Protests were held in several parts of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, seeking rehabilitation of families affected by the Sardar Sarovar Dam. "With 1.25 billion people with me, I can't dream small", he said.

The Prime Minister said that in the western part of the country, there is water shortage, and in the eastern part, there is power and gas shortage.

Meanwhile government's decision to go ahead with the dam project was opposed by large number of affected villagers.

The 1,312-kilometre-long river drains into the Arabian Sea after passing through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Construction on the dam had been suspended in 1996 following a stay by the Supreme Court which allowed work to resume, four years later, but with conditions. The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), led by social activist Medha Patkar, has been protesting against the project, raising several environmental concerns.

Modi had undertaken a 51-hour fast in 2005 for the permission to raise the dam height.

In response to the National Basketball Association, the pro-dam people of Gujarat also launched many agitations citing its benefits.
