Fiat Chrysler North America says that it is voluntarily recalling almost 500,000 of its popular heavy duty work trucks because of potential fires. The chassis cabs are the 3500, 4500 and 5500 models.

A Chrysler spokesman told auto and Driver that the automaker is "aware of a small number of incidents", saying reports met the "regulatory definition of fire, which includes everything from a burning odor to open flame". The recall is associated with the water pump, which could cause a fire under certain conditions.

The auto company said it no longer uses the water-pumps in question and no other vehicles are being recalled at this time.

No injuries have been reported, but owners will be notified and can get a replacement at any dealer location.

FCA discovered that some Ram vehicles with the 6.7-liter turbodiesel Cummins engine are equipped with a water pump bearing that could overheat and potentially lead to an engine fire.

"Compromised water-pump function may activate a warning light in an affected vehicle's instrument cluster".

Owners who have questions are encouraged to call the FCA US Recall Information Center at (800)-853-1403. Dealerships will inspect the water pump and replace it, if needed.

The recall affects about 443,712 trucks in the United States, 46,220 in Canada and 4,485 outside North America. The action isn't the first one this year involving Ram pickups.
