Vehicle 'infotainment' systems may increase distracted driving, AAA says

Voice-controlled systems allowing motorists to use their sat-nav or text at the wheel can be so distracting they should be banned a new study advises Complicated 'infotainment' car increasing risk of road deaths

The foundation commissioned researchers from the University of Utah to examine the visual and cognitive demand as well as the time it took drivers to complete a task using the infotainment systems in 30 new 2017 vehicles.

A study undertaken by the AAA Foundation for Road Safety in the USA has found some in-car infotainment systems are more distracting than ever in 2017. A auto going 25 miles per hour can travel the length of four football fields in that time.

The AAA urges automakers to design systems so as to block text messaging, social media and programming navigation while the vehicle is in motion. David Strayer, a professor at the University of Utah, said, "Some of the most advanced systems are really very hard for the driver to use". Armed with touchscreen and voice-based technologies, researchers pegged the Audi Q7 as having a "very high" level of distraction.

Previous AAA research indicates one in three US adults use infotainment systems while driving. The research consisted of 120 drivers between the ages of 21 and 36. This is supposed to make controlling these functions easier and less distracting, but the study's authors say the verdict is still out and it plans to assess these systems in future studies.

The technology, which has exploded in recent years, is built into the dashboard of the vehicle and provides entertainment and information content for passengers.

Unsurprisingly, the group found that typing in an address is the most distracting element of these systems; programming navigation takes an average of 40 seconds. "Automakers have developed vehicle-integrated systems, to which portable electronics may be connected, that are created to be used in the driving environment and require driver attention that is comparable to tuning the radio or adjusting climate controls, which have always been considered baseline acceptable behaviors while driving".

With options for sending texts, surfing the internet and checking social media in some tech packages, the risks only go up from there. Automakers should also design infotainment systems so that they require no more attention to use than listening to the radio or an audiobook, it said.

For so long, researchers have focused on how cellular phones facilitate a variety of distracted driving behaviors, such as texting and driving.
