"At my age, that's enough".

The New York City FC midfielder confirmed that he will be hanging up his playing boots at the end of the MLS season in December, and has been discussing his career with the media.

But Milan made a huge strategic error in allowing Pirlo to leave on a free transfer in 2011 and he joined Juventus to help usher in one of the greatest periods in the club's history, with Pirlo winning four straight league titles from 2011 to 2015.

It's unquestionable to say success was in no short supply for Pirlo during his career, but he has finally conceded that age has caught up with him.

Asked by Italian newspaper Gazetta Dello Sport what his plans are when his New York City contract comes to an end on December 31, Pirlo said: "You just realise that the time has come".

"At 38, it's just right to give young players room".

You realize that the time has come.

At club level, he has won everything from Serie A titles to Champions League and he achieved the pinnacle of football when he won FIFA World Cup with Italy in 2006. You don't have to carry on until you are 50.

As for the next chapter in Pirlo's life, he also spoke about working under Conte again, having played under the Chelsea chief at Juventus and for the Italian national team.

"His attention to detail is impressive", Pirlo said of the Chelsea manager, who led Italy from 2014 to 2016.

"If you get a call from a first team right away, it's hard to refuse". He played crucial role in AC Milan's domination of football in early 2000s and went onto win a host of domestic as well as continental trophies during his 10 year stay at Rossoneri.
