Then on Saturday afternoon, Trump once again got people anxious by bluntly stating that "only one thing will work" when it comes to dealing with North Korea because efforts at diplomacy have failed. And on Saturday, he insisted "only one thing will work" to solve the North Korean nuclear impasse. Mulvaney said it was the first he had heard about the tweet, but said every bit of it was true.

"This should have been handled 25 years ago, it should have been handled 10 years ago".

The interview made headlines all across the Pacific Rim, and remains the leading story on the South Korean Yonhap News Agency website as of this writing. This has left it unclear who or what he was specifically referring to when he said "giving billions of dollars".

Tensions have run high in the wake of North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches and sixth nuclear test in September.

The president has previously said the United States would "totally destroy" North Korea if necessary to protect itself and its allies from Pyongyang's nuclear threats.

In recent weeks, North Korea has launched two missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth nuclear test, all in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, and may be fast advancing toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the USA mainland. He also said, without elaborating, that "only one thing will work".

Tillerson says that the State Department has "a couple of direct channels to Pyongyang" for humanitarian purposes and is hoping for a "peaceful resolution"; Trump tweets "Save your energy Rex, we'll do what has to be done!" After a meeting with military leaders that day, Trump pointed to a line of uniformed generals and said, "You guys know what this represents?"

"Stand by your phones", Yong Suk Lee, deputy assistant director of the CIA's Korea Mission Center, said he had told his staff. The words were seen as a sign that Pyongyang has no intention to back down from its nuclear ambitions at a time when there is broad concern North Korea could carry out a major weapons test in the near future to mark the anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party on Tuesday.
