Environmental organisations on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court's ban on the sale of firecrackers here and in the National Capital Region, and said it will help to curb noise and air pollution.

It was reported that the sale of firecrackers has been suspended from Delhi and nearby areas amid air pollution.

CAIT National President B C Bhartia & Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said that Supreme Court has imposed ban on sale of fire crackers in Delhi NCR but there is no ban on bursting of crackers.

Each year, the festival leaves the air in Delhi thick with smoke and pollution.

"The ban will ensure that the levels of air pollutant do not reach as high a limit as they did a year ago around Diwali", said Ajay Mathur, Director General, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). In fact, according to a report in The Hindu, during Diwali night previous year, the city's air pollution levels were 14-16 times beyond the safe limits. It directed the Delhi Police to reduce the number of temporary licences by 50 per cent and cap it at 500. Later on September 12, 2017, the ban on fireworks was dismissed temporarily.

The court said that people who had already bought fireworks could use them, but that new ones could not be sold.

A 2014 World Health OrganiSation survey of more than 1,600 cities ranked Delhi as the most polluted.

Diwali, traditionally ushered in with the setting off of firecrackers mainly by India's majority Hindu community, falls on October 19 this year.

The children had argued: "We are the most vulnerable category when it comes to air pollution, especially from suspended particles and toxins".

The onset of winter usually worsens the situation as cooler temperatures trap the pollutants, exacerbated by crop burning in neighbouring states. The crackers will remain banned till 1 November and Diwali will be celebrated on 19th of October this year. The Bench, in its judgment, had also opined that a graded and balanced approach would be needed to reduce and eliminate the air pollution in the capital caused due to firecrackers.
