Donald Trump sends list of hard-line immigration policy principles to Congress

The list was criticised by Mr Chuck Schumer and Ms Nancy Pelosi, the respective Democratic leaders in the Senate and House.

The immigration overhaul would end so-called "chain migration" in the green card program by limiting who US citizens can sponsor to only spouses and minor children.

Instead of finding a legislative solution to the situation of young people protected by DACA, the Democrats found the President's request for funding for his long-awaited border wall.

In exchange, Trump would back legislation for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which would give legal immigrant status to Dreamers, the approximately 800,000 undocumented immigrants in DACA now residing in the country.

The White House released a list of "principles", many of which are policies that Democrats have already categorically rejected, meaning that the ongoing congressional negotiations to protect the "Dreamers" could come to a halt.

A Democratic aide familiar with the process told TIME on Monday that numerous principles outlined by the White House could face opposition from lawmakers both sides of the aisle.

The White House wants funding for a border wall, additional immigration enforcement personnel, and a crackdown on unaccompanied minors arriving in the US, mainly from Central American countries.

Around 690,000 immigrants are enrolled in the DACA program. If there were any fears that Trump was caving in to Democrat demands on a DACA deal - and there were - this immigration plan will quickly dispel them.

"President Trump created a crisis for almost one million DREAMers when he unilaterally ended the DACA program to appease the most extreme anti-immigrant voices in his party", Crowley said in a statement. In the House, Grisham is leading an effort to force a vote on the Dream Act, which would allow immigrants brought to the U.S.as children to eventually become citizens. "If the president was serious about protecting the Dreamers, his staff has not made a good faith effort to do so".

Trump has moved to tense up border security through executive orders. This proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise, ' they added.

After an enormous outcry, Trump undermined his AG, as he is wont to do, and met with Democratic leaders to discuss a possible deal to protect the "Dreamers". Now, he's insisting on things like more limits on legal immigration and removing protections for unaccompanied minor immigrants.

Mr. Schumer and Mrs. Pelosi, who received the immigration principles on Sunday, reacted with dismay.

Trump's Republicans have failed so far to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, and a White House plan for tax reform still needs more support.
