Police changed the timeline of the October 1 mass shooting at a music festival along the Las Vegas Strip, telling reporters today that a Mandalay Bay security guard inspecting outside Stephen Paddock's suite was shot six minutes before Paddock opened fire on the crowd below.

Fifty-eight people died and almost 500 were injured when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor country music festival-an act that investigators are still at a loss to explain-before taking his own life.

Campos was shot through the door at 9:59 p.m. - "prior to [Paddock's] shooting to the outside world", Lombardo said.

However, now it appears as though the security guard was shot by Paddock six minutes before Paddock opened fire on concert-goers. Campos was shot in the leg, but survived, authorities said.

"The police officers themselves could've engaged Paddock and at least taken the gunfire instead of him shooting out at the festival", Giacalone said.

Sheriff Lombardo addressed media outlets on Monday at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police headquarters.

Lombardo previously said Campos was injured after the attack started, and, according to a police timeline, the first officers arrived on Paddock's floor at 10:17 p.m.

Charles "Sid" Heal, a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's commander and tactical expert, said the new timeline "changes the whole perspective of the shooting". "We do not know whether he had planned to cause additional harm outside of what occurred at Mandalay Bay".

When asked about reports of a note found in Paddock's room, Lombardo said that those were incorrect.

Paddock had power tools and was trying to drill a hole in a wall, perhaps to mount another of the security cameras he set up around him, or to point a rifle through, but he never completed the work, Lombardo said.

Investigators are now working on learning more about Paddock's frame of mind.

"I thought ... maybe it's something on top of the hotel", he said in an interview from Emporia, Kansas.

Police had said that after Paddock shot at Campos through the door, the gunman didn't fire any more shots into the crowd.

"This individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event", Lombardo said, "and it is hard for us to find the answers to those actions".

Americans still know very little about shooter Stephen Paddock other than that he was a wealthy real estate investor turned gambler.

The move made her "grateful, but anxious", thinking that Paddock was breaking up with her, she said in her statement.

"Currently we do not believe that there is one particular event in the suspect's life for us to key on", he said.

Sheriff Lombardo added that "some things are going to change" in the investigation as gather more information.

Authorities made elaborate arrangements to assist people with their lost belongings and volunteers filled out intake forms with detailed descriptions of their lost items.
