The project was initially announced back in 2015 during Disney's D23 fan convention.

Disney Animation is no longer interested in climbing the beanstalk, no matter what treasure may be at the top.

Variety reports that Walt Disney Animation Studios has ceased development on enormous, a big screen adaptation of the classic fairytale "Jack and the Beanstalk" set to hit theaters on November 25, 2020.

He explains that they've put quite a bit of work into huge, but "no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it" sometimes it just doesn't work out. However, it looks like all that work isn't going to pay off since it's going to be canceled.

Apparently the studio got to the point where the creative process has hit a wall and they are "ending active development for now".

Instead of "Gigantic", the studio is focusing on another project which is now being tabled for Thanksgiving 2020. The film was originally set to be released in 2020 and would have featured Jack making friends with a female giant child.

Details regarding the new project were not revealed, although insiders said it would be an original feature.

While Catmull's statement leaves the door cracked open to revisit very big again in the future, the film now joins the likes of Pixar's Newt and Disney's King of the Elves as projects shelved after long periods of development. Several names from some of Disney's most successful animated movies had been attached to develop the project, including Inside Out co-writer Meg LeFauve and Tangled's Nathan Greno as co-directors, and Frozen's Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez as songwriters.

With animation being such a painstakingly detailed process, Disney's upcoming releases - including Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Frozen 2 - have been in the works for years.
