Ophelia becomes remarkable 10th hurricane of season

Tropical Storm Ophelia to Become Record-Tying 10th Straight Atlantic Hurricane Soon, Then an Intense Post-Tropical Wednesday's Weather Word: Ophelia
Angelica Greene | 12 October, 2017, 00:43

The storm is moving east at 3 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said in an update Wednesday afternoon. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.

The 2017 hurricane season was forecast by NOAA, and many other forecast products to be the busiest we have seen since 2010.

Ophelia could brush by the Azores this weekend.

As of the 5am update from the National Hurricane Center Tropical Storm Ophelia is spinning away in the north Atlantic as the 15th named storm of this hurricane season.

Ophelia became a hurricane late Wednesday, the tenth in a row and tying a record set more than a century ago. Could western Europe be the next land area afflicted by a powerhouse storm this frightful hurricane season?

While Ophelia may lose the technical aspects that make it a hurricane, it could still pack a punch.

After moving past Spain, forecasters expect Ophelia to come quite close to the Irish coast as a strong storm on Monday.

Ophalia is presently the only storm the NHC is tracking in the Atlantic or Pacific.

The non-tropical phase of Ophelia may feature a larger, more intense storm that could bring a range of hazards to Ireland and the United Kingdom, from damaging winds to punishing waves.

"This is a relatively unusual track for a hurricane to take, but it's not unheard of", said UK Met Office forecaster Aiden McGivern in a video.

Tropical Storm Ophelia is expected to strengthen to a hurricane as it spins far out over the Atlantic.
