U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai'i), Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet, released the following statement today after President Donald Trump threatened to challenge NBC's broadcast license.

Trump was responding to a news report that he had said during a meeting at the Pentagon in July that he wanted what amounted to almost a ten-fold increase in the number of US nuclear weapons.

Mr. Trump said that NBC News' reporting is "Pure fiction, made up to demean" and compared it to CNN, which he has previously also criticized and labeled as "fake news".

Trump writes on Twitter that with all the "Fake News" coming out of "NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?"

Comcast was down almost 1% to 37.31 in late trading on the stock market today.

A day after posting that tweet, Trump dismissed concerns about a nuclear arms race during an off-camera conversation with MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski. "It was soon after the meeting broke up that officials who remained behind heard Tillerson say that Trump was a "moron".

"No, I never discussed increasing it".

A spokesman for North Korea's foreign ministry said last month that the more sanctions the U.S. and its allies impose on North Korea, the faster the nation will work to develop its nuclear weapons programme, according to North Korea's official KCNA news agency.

The president was reacting to an NBC News report that he pushed senior aides for a major expansion of the US nuclear arsenal.

The president's suggestion is unlikely to do much to ease his frustrations. Instead, licenses are issued to local stations. Trump wrote. "Bad for country!"

"Under deregulatory measures that Republicans successfully pushed over the past generation, challenging a license on the grounds that coverage is unfair or biased would be extremely hard", the newspaper reported.

The initial report about Tillerson's comment prompted Tillerson to confirm his commitment to the administration and compliment the president in an impromptu news conference.

During a joint meeting with Canadian Prime Minsiter Justin Trudeau at the White House Trump said that the current nuclear arsenal of the United States is already sufficient, and that no increase is needed.

Neither the White House nor Comcast/NBC Universal responded for comment on Trump's tweet.
