Susan Collins, who has emerged this year as a powerful moderate Republican swing vote opposing President Trump on health-care and other issues, will remain in the U.S. Senate rather than run for governor, she is announcing this morning. "You are such a person'".

The 64-year-old Collins announced earlier Friday that she would be staying out of the governor's race because she believes she can do more for ME by remaining in the U.S. Senate.

The 64-year-old Collins has been weighing for months whether she'd make a bigger impact in the Senate or by launching a bid to become the first woman to serve as Maine's governor.

Although she has been one of Maine's most popular politicians for some time, there was no guarantee that she would win her party's nomination in the June primary.

"I am a congenital optimist, and I continue to believe that Congress can - and will - be more productive".

She made her decision not to run as Maine's next governor after much deliberation, she said.

As one of the few remaining moderate Republicans in the Senate, Collins' departure would have left a noticeable mark on the politics of the chamber. She also slammed her GOP colleagues for drafting bills to repeal and replace the ACA behind closed doors over the summer.

"Senator Collins is so busy trying to stop President Trump's agenda on the national stage, she is out of touch with her own state", LePage said in a radio address last week.

Collins has been a pivotal vote in the Senate this year in defeating Republican attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Collins won that race and has gone on to win re-election three times, most recently in 2014 when she was re-elected in a relative landslide. Prior to her announcement, she said she wanted to "heal ME", a comment read by some as a swipe at LePage's polarizing style. Most recently, of course, Collins has played an important role as one of the handful of Republican Senators that singlehandedly blocked efforts in that body to pass a bill that would "repeal and replace" the Affordable Care Act.

Collins plans to reveal her decision at a meeting of local business leaders in the city of Rockland. With Governor Paul LePage, who's kind of a Donald Trump in duck boots, term-limited out of office, Collins was seen as a strong candidate to keep the governor's mansion in GOP hands.

Among other assignments, Collins is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, the panel leading the congressional Russian Federation investigations.
