Canadian-born actor Anna Paquin welcomed any men who wish to show their support under the trending hash tag #WomenBoycottTwitter. According to a tweet, Twitter suspended the account because she posted a "private phone number".

"Any allegations of non-consensual contact are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein", Weinstein representative Sallie Hofmeister said Wednesday.

Several women of colour have also pointed out that they have been experiencing and calling out harassment on and off Twitter for years, and that this kind of snap action in response to a high-profile white woman being banned does very little to support them.

Rose is one of a host of stars who allege the disgraced movie mogul sexually harassed or assaulted them, and had been using Twitter to denounce those she viewed as complicit in protecting him.

McGowan instagrammed the notification she received from the company, adding: "TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME". The tweet has since been deleted and McGowan's account unlocked.

Chrissy Teigen is a frequent tweeter who has had a rocky relationship with social media.

To this, Rose had tweeted, "GODDAMNIT!" Quite a few Twitter users noticed the company seems to have an exceptionally arbitrary and unclear policy on suspending accounts.

"Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power", the rep continued. "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices", it added.

Rose McGowan - one of many actresses to have spoken out about Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual abuse and harassment - has been slapped with a temporary suspension from Twitter. #WomenBoycottTwitter. Not because of hate but because I love this platform and know it can be better.
