Target Fidget Spinners Need to Get the Lead Out, PIRG Says

One of the fidget spinners contained more than 300 times the legal amount of lead allowed in children's toys. The sellers maintain the item is not for kids Fidget spinners sold at Target contain lead, advocacy group says

Even though it's not marketed as a children's toy, the group said there's no denying that kids use the product. However, these toys could be on the way out as well.

The US Public Interest Research Group on Thursday released a report stating that Target stores are selling some fidget spinners with high levels of lead. Said a spokesperson for Target: "The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reviewed and explicitly defined fidget spinners as 'general use products.' They are not defined by the CPSC as toys". Federal laws limit lead in "children's products" to 100 parts per million. The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass center circle tested for 33,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead.

The center circle tested for 1,300 ppm of lead. "Saying fidget spinners aren't toys defies common sense, as millions of parents whose kids play with spinners can tell you".

MASSPIRG, a consumer advocacy group, alerted Target and Bulls i Toy, the distributor.

Shares of Target were last seen down fractionally at $58.17, with a consensus analyst price target of $59.28 and a 52-week range of $48.56 to $79.33.

Bulls-I-Toys, the manufacturer of the fidget spinners in question, said in a letter to US PIRG that "there are no mandatory CPSC requirements for it" because the packaging makes it clear that the item should not be used by children of a certain age. "Framed as a toy, the fidget spinner is also a great stress-relief tool", the online description reads.

CoPIRG says lead exposure is particularly damaging for young children because of its impact on development.

The two brands of fidget spinners identified by USPIRG were the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal.

CBS News reports that the gadgets are being sold in the toy aisles alongside the spinners sold to 6-year-olds.

While U.S. PIRG notified the CPSC, the agency held firm that the fidget spinners are not toys.

Target did not immediately respond to request for comment.

In a prepared statement, Target Spokesman Lee Henderson told CBS News those particular models were not intended to be used by children under 14, which means certain lead restrictions don't apply.
