Undercover inspections conducted by the Department of Homeland Security uncovered a slew of "vulnerabilities" at the security checkpoints of multiple airports across the country, according to ABC News.

It's still not clear exactly how many weapons were let through security during the probe, but a congressional committee chairman who saw the numbers called it disturbing.

CBS News reports that in a classified briefing, Homeland Security investigators revealed that more than 70 percent of the time, undercover officers was able to get through TSA checkpoints with mock knives, guns and explosives.

Pekoske said that "to invest in the CT technology requires funding above what TSA now has", but the agency wasn't on the path to CT development at checkpoints when the budget was developed, so the program wasn't reviewed for investment.

TSA pre-check travelers are exempt from the new screenings and can leave devices in their bags when traveling through the designated pre-check line, according to the TSA. Travelers now need to take out liquids, food, and electronics larger than a cell phone from their bags before entering security scanners at many airports, all in the goal of preventing risky substances and weapons from entering airports and aircraft.

While ABC's source did not give details about the findings, they did say that at least eight recommendations had been made to the TSA to improve checkpoint security, but it's unclear where.

The failure rate is actually an improvement from a similar undercover operation undertaken by the DHS in 2015, when operatives found the TSA had a failure rate of 95 percent.

"This agency that you run is broken badly and it needs your attention", Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Alabama) told Pekoske.

The House committee's top Democrat, Bennie Thompson, Miss., noted in a statement after the meeting that the White House budget request would reduce TSA funding next year.

"We take the OIG's findings very seriously and are implementing measures that will improve screening effectiveness at checkpoints", TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a release.

Rep. Bill Keating (D-Mass) thinks there's an entirely different reason why the new machines haven't been implemented on a larger scale.
