Gareth Southgate has said his successor as England manager may end up benefiting most from the current setup's commitment to youth progression, with a trio of players from the England under-21s called up for Tuesday's friendly against Brazil.

"I've got to assess who are the players that I think could play at the highest level", said Southgate.

"At times it was hard for them to press us because of the composure we showed and the system we played, so I think it was a brilliant experience for our players".

There will be able a temptation to play Loftus-Cheek again after a man-of-the-match debut that followed Harry Winks' impressive bow in Lithuania last month. When you don't play you really feel the difference of what matches give you - the match sharpness, the fitness.

Dier, 23, wore the captain's armband in the global friendly clash that finished 0-0 at Wembley, and although it was a goalless game, it definitely gave some encouragement ahead of the World Cup in Russian Federation next summer as Gareth Southgate was forced to field a second-string side. I had Gareth in charge for almost three years at the Under-21s and the boys have been great.

"He's quite a quiet lad, so I'm hoping he gets a lift in confidence from how we see him, the level we think he's capable of".

"It took him 10 minutes to realise he's OK here".

Does he deserve a spot in the Chelsea first-team?

"There are no guarantees but I feel I have a better chance of playing".

Abraham and Loftus-Cheek are both on a season-long loan deals at Swansea and Crystal Palace respectively from Chelsea, and Higginbotham believes they have a "great opportunity" to impress Southgate.

But it was not just Loftus-Cheek who caught the eye. "For me, it was a real positive tonight".

"What we've seen is Gareth will pick those players".

"I just tried to soak it all in and I am really pleased with it". I'll find out whose played well tonight, who warrants the decision. If we had won then it would have been better but the other games come thick and fast.
