Vettel led the F1 drivers' championship from the opening race until the Italian Grand Prix in September, with a collapse over the trio of Asian races that followed to deal a heavy blow to his hopes of a fifth world title.

Members of Lewis Hamilton's Formula 1 team have been held up at gunpoint and robbed on the eve of Sunday's (12 November) Brazilian Grand Prix.

New Zealander Brendon Hartley, who won the world endurance championship for the second time last weekend, failed to set a time on the morning of his 28th birthday thanks to an engine blowup while French rookie Pierre Gasly also stopped early on. Finnish team mate Valtteri Bottas was second in both and ended up just 0.048 slower. Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari was second, Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari third, and Max Verstappen of Red Bull fourth.

Hartley finished nearly two seconds slower than Bottas in 17th place. "I knew that in the last corner in that first Q3 run I had a little bit left because I lost the rear a bit". "Still a bit shaky but it's a good feeling".

"Obviously, Lewis was out in the beginning which was a shame for us but I'm happy that I could stand up for us".

The 32-year-old Englishman remained in his cockpit for some moments before informing his team that he was not injured in the high-speed smash.

"It is what it is, of course it's unfortunate, I tend to just look at it as... challenges are what makes life interesting, and overcoming them makes life meaningful", Hamilton said.

"I think they (Renault) are really struggling to understand what are the root cause of these issues", said Horner.

"I will try to have as much fun as possible tomorrow, years ago I came from quite far behind and had a great race".
