LSU's next opponent, Tennessee, fires its head coach

Tennessee Vols set to take on potent Missouri offense in their final regular-season road contest of season LSU's next opponent, Tennessee, fires its head coach: report

It's been rumored for weeks that Vols football coach Butch Jones would be on the outs. His overall head coaching record is 148-78 and was 11-2 in his first season at MI. For that reason, I have asked Coach Jones to step down as head football coach. I want to make clear that we are intensely committed to hiring the best coach of Tennessee.

Jones, hired at Tennessee on December 7, 2012, as the Vols' 24 head coach, after winning four conference championships in his previous six years, and his staff have done a terrific job recruiting players to Tennessee, but the development of many has been widely considered sub-par. "I know Coach Jones will be successful moving forward, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors". Coach Brady Hoke has been interim head coach.

The sudden decline has been shocking. He went 3-0 in bowl games and had the Vols ranked inside the Top 10 after a 5-0 start in 2016, but the decision to move on from Jones ends a five-year stretch mostly mired in mediocrity.

But Jones couldn't push his program up to the higher level that Vols fans expected. He has been coaching the defensive line, while holding the title of associate head coach. When was this team going to overtake the competition in the SEC East, finally defeat Alabama, win a conference championship and be in the College Football Playoff discussion?

He also was a head coach at Ball State and San Diego State, holding an overall record of 78-70. He will surely land elsewhere, having had success in previous stops at Central Michigan and Cincinnati.

LSU and Tennessee are set to square off on Saturday in Knoxville in what will be the Vols' first game under an interim coach. Finding the right guy has been hard, and there will be intense pressure to get it right this next time.
