Three children and an adult are being treated at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, officials said. A second child had a gunshot wound to the right leg. There are at least seven crime scenes related to the incident.

"I am told at this point the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets, that's what I'm told".

Johnston also said "a number of students" were medically evacuated from the area, while the school was cleared.

In addition to the four people killed in the shooting, several people were injured, including children. The kids who were at the school are in a safe location, Johnston said.

Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District, said no-one was killed at the school with prep through fifth grades. The gunman was shot by officials, according to the sheriff's department.

The school is in the Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.

A neighbor of the shooter spoke with the media and said that the suspect was acting "crazy", and that the suspect threatened him and his roommate before stealing his truck.

Tiffany's husband, Brian Rodgers, said another witness reported seeing a white pickup drive through the school gate and start shooting.

Authorities have recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns after the shootings in the rural subdivision described on its website as a "quiet private country community" where "the people are friendly and the pace is relaxed".

The owner of Coffee Addition, a cafe near the shooting, said she heard about 100 rounds fired and multiple guns.
