Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of "Mario Bros.", is reportedly part of the film talks, and the Wall Street Journal reports he'll likely be a producer.

I wouldn't do Super Mario Brothers.

According to the report, the companies have been in negotiations for a year and the fact Universal (which finances and distributes Illumination's movie) has partnered with Nintendo for several theme parks was helpful.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, they've nearly reached one of those partnership deals with the studio behind the Minions movie, Illumination Entertainment. Let's face it, Illumination are one of the best animation houses out there at the moment, so they're more than flawless to bring a new Super Mario Brothers movie to the screen. According to the site talks have been ongoing for a year but it is only now close to completion, with the deal apparently for one film. The original live-action Super Mario Bros, a 1993 film starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, was a damn nightmare.

Neither Nintendo or Illumination Pictures commented on the Journal's report, but it's not that much of a stretch.

It's not uncommon for popular gaming franchises to be turned into movies and while efforts like the Assassin's Creed movie might have bombed, Nintendo would be hoping for a different result.

Let's all hope (and pray) that Nintendo, together with Illumination Entertainment, can pull this off.

The film is not expected to come out any time soon, as it is still in its early stages.
