GameStop Delays Unlimited Game Rental Service Before Launch

GameStop spiel Temporarily on hold

GameStop's new initiative to have a games rental service has been paused for the time being.

Kotaku reports that GameStop has told its employees to pull down all promotional material related to the PowerPass subscription program.

With PowerPass, subscribers would be able to rent an unlimited number of used games from the retailer, essentially making it an alternative to the local library and things like GameFly. The service, which has a price of $60, soft-launched this week.

However, that is all in the past tense, because after a recent soft launch PowerPass has been suspended. Indeed, according to one GameStop spokesperson, the company has merely identified "a few program limitations" that they'd like to iron out to "ensure [they] are able to provide [their] guests an exceptional service".

Don't worry if you've already bought a PowerPass subscription, though. However, according to the wording in the statement that GameStop provided, it appears that at least some customers have been given early access to the service. Additionally, they can pick out any used game to have for free-not a bad tradeoff.

For now, buying games at GameStop requires old-fashioned monetary exchange. Still, even in areas with poor download speeds or rampant data caps from ISPs, customers might be inclined to order new games from Amazon rather than go to a retail outlet. It is unclear when the program will return to GameStop for the public, if ever. In the meantime, one alternative would be Microsoft's Game Pass program, which gives Xbox owners access to 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games for $10 per month.

PowerPass has the potential to be a very popular service - that is if the catalog of games available is relatively large and up-to-date.
