Russian Federation uses fake photos to accuse U.S. of supporting ISIS

11_14_Russian_MoD post Russia says US providing cover for Islamic State in Syria

The ministry claimed in a Facebook post and tweet on Tuesday that the picture showed an "Isis automobile convoy" fleeing Abu Kamal, Syria, under United States protection on November 9.

Russia's defence ministry has tried to pass off what appear to be stills from a mobile phone military simulation game as "irrefutable evidence" of cooperation between U.S. forces and Islamic State militants in Syria, Guardian writes. Russia said the Americans actively interfered with Russian airstrikes, to provide cover for the Isis fighters.

Earlier Tuesday, the MoD uploaded images on Facebook and Twitter, which it said were evidence that the U.S. were actually covering up Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL) combat units.

It said the US-led coalition refused requests to cooperate and "eliminate fleeing Isis convoys".

Researchers at Conflict Intelligence Team, a nonprofit group that investigates Russian military activities, subsequently reported that three other images shared by Russia as "irrefutable evidence" of US forces assisting the Islamic State were actually taken from video released by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense in 2016.

But none of the images are from Abu Kamal, and none are from November 9. As you'd expect from someone caught with their trousers down, the original tweets and Facebook posts have since been deleted, but once you post something on the Internet it's there forever.

The Conflict Intelligence Team fact-checking group said the other four provided were also errors, taken from a June 2016 video which showed the Iraqi Air Force attacking IS in Iraq. Here are the best war games on PC.

This isn't the first time the Russian government has been caught distributing fake or misattributed video. A scene in a documentary about Putin made by the U.S. film-maker Oliver Stone showed Putin playing the director video footage on a telephone of what he said were Russian forces on operations in Syria.

A US Department of Defense spokesman said this incident was just the latest "episode" by the Russians.

A spokesperson for the Russian defence ministry told media it was "carrying out checks on a civilian employee who mistakenly added photographs to the ministry's statement".
