Tanks seen heading for Zimbabwe capital, rumor of coup

Breaking: Mugabe in trouble: 4 army tanks move towards capital Army tanks seen heading towards Harare amid rising tensions between Mugabe and the military

Witnesses in the city reported several lorries full of military personnel and at least six armoured vehicles on roads approaching the city in the late afternoon, though residents said there was no sign of troops in the centre of Harare, the airport, government broadcasters or the residence of president Robert Mugabe.

But his downfall appeared to pave the way for his wife Grace to succeed her 93-year-old husband.

While pledging allegiance to President Robert Mugabe as Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, Constantino Chiwenga told a press conference that some counter-revolutionaries were bent on reversing the gains of the liberation struggle and making Zimbabwe a neo-colonial state.

On Monday, top army general Constantino Chiwenga warned Mugabe that the military will "step in" if the president continues to expel former liberation fighters from the ruling Zanu-PF party who are supporters of the sacked vice president.

Mugabe has threatened to fire more than 100 officials linked to Emmerson Mnangagwa, the vice president he sacked last week and who enjoys the support of the influential War Veterans' Association.

It said it stood by the "primacy of politics over the gun" and accused General Chiwenga of "treasonable conduct ... meant to incite insurrection".

Although the ruling ZANU-PF party has said it would never succumb to military pressure.

Historically President Mugabe is generally afraid, and interprets any show of defiance as risk of a possible coup and has in the past tightened his personal security over simple things like social media dissent, or strikes by workers. Several tanks were seen moving near the Zimbabwean capital Harare on November 14, 2017.

Speculation has been rife in Harare that Mugabe could seek to remove Chiwenga, who is seen as an ally of ousted Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa was subsequently fired from the party and has since left the country.

"As a result of the squabbling, there has been no meaningful development in the country for the past five years".

Despite the reports of the tanks, Zimbabwe's ruling party Zanu PF took to Twitter to deny rumours of a coup.

Mugabe has broken with most of his allies who fought in the liberation war against the white-minority regime of Rhodesia, leaving the so-called Generation-40 faction of younger members of the ruling party championed by his wife, Grace Mugabe, 52, in the ascendancy.
