Chris Coleman has made the surprise decision to step down as Wales manager, the FAW confirmed on Friday evening.

Coleman will succeed Simon Grayson, who was sacked after 18 games in charge.

Coleman qualified the side for last summer's European Championships, Wales' first major tournament since 1958, before making it all the way to the semi-finals where they were defeated by eventual winners Portugal.

McCoist's only experience in the dugout came at Ibrox between 2011 and 2014, but the Scot has spoken about his affection for the North-East club, who now sit at the bottom of the Championship standings.

"Kit Symons has also resigned from his position as National Team Coach and the FAW would like to put on record its gratitude for his commitment to the Wales National Team".

Taking the Sunderland job will mean a return to club management for the first time in five years for Coleman.

Coleman's decision to leave global football will come as a massive disappointment to the Wales players, who made their feelings known as to how desperate they were for him to continue in the job after his spectacular success. He is being linked with a move away from Wales after they failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russian Federation.

Heckingbottom is understood to be in the running, while former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has been linked with the vacancy - although sources close to the Spaniard have distanced him from it - and Ally McCoist, who worked with Bain at Rangers, has also come under consideration.

Heckingbottom distanced himself from the role when quizzed about being linked to the job before the worldwide break.

There is no doubt that Coleman is an experienced manager and would be a good appointment by Sunderland. He also had short spells overseas with Real Sociedad and AEL Athens.
