The American country music hitmaker passed way earlier today at Florida's Munroe Regional Medical Center.

Mel Tillis, Country Music Hall of Famer known for his stammer when he spoke that disappeared when he sang, died Sunday morning of suspected respiratory failure. In October 2007, he became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

"But his whimsy and warmth were only a part of his appeal".

Country singers are responding with their own sentiments. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2012 from Former President Barack Obama and is a CMA Entertainer of the Year.

Lonnie Melvin Tillis was born in Tampa, Fla. on August 8, 1932. After leaving the service he went to work for a railroad while writing songs on the side, eventually moving to Nashville in 1957 to pursue a music career.

Among hits he wrote for others were "Detroit City" for Bobby Bare, and "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", by Rogers and the First Edition.

After his recording career faded in the 1980s, Tillis acquired several radio stations including KIXZ and KYTX in Amarillo, Tex., and WMML in Mobile, Ala., which he eventually sold for a sizable profit.

"Pam's father was dearly loved and one of a kind". He also briefly co-hosted an ABC prime-time series, "Mel and Susan Together", with supermodel Susan Anton in 1978. He also made a TV appearance in an episode of "The Dukes of Hazzard" in the late '70s. "I'm saddened to hear of the passing of my friend, Mel Tillis", Grammy Award-winning country singer Crystal Gayle wrote on Twitter, adding, "There will never be another Mel Tillis!" His family plans to announce funeral arrangements in Nashville and Florida soon. "There's a big difference between a concert and a show. There will never be another Mel Tillis!" "You always felt good about being around him".
